A comparative study of the operation capabilities of floating cranes is carried out. Time series and bifurcation analysis reveal a coexistence of subharmonic oscillations. Surge and pitch motion of the floating vessel as well as the coupled motion of the swinging load are substantially influenced by nonlinear restoring forces. High peaks in the mooring line forces occur due to increased surge amplitudes. The analysis identifies the significance of key parameters and reveals how the mooring system design can be adjusted to avoid critical conditions.
