An automated design optimization program combines a non-linear optimization library an a pre-compiler. The library written in C++ includes several optimization algorithms including a hybrid optimzation method combining local and global optimization techniques. The pre-compiler converts keywords of an input file into C++ source code for using the library. The method applied to a bulk carrier preliminary design problem using the approach of multidisciplinary design optimization.
