The availability of supply and transportation of coal is of vital importance to many power producers. The relationship between utilities and railroad industry takes on added significance in a competitive environment where coal still provides more than 50 percent of US power. Because of electric utility deregulation, the impact it has on coal shippers and the entrance of new players into coal supply, generation ownership and power trading, future business relationships between generators and railroads may be substantially different than in the period following deregulation of the railroad industry.
