The MATADOR-project aims to develop test procedures and measurement methods for the evaluation of performance, energy consumption and emissions of vehicles with advanced propulsion systems. Test procedures will enable realistic comparisons between different technologies and will be representative for actual use. Based on an inventory of existing and prospective standard test procedures and of problems associated with testing electric, hybrid and fuel cell vehicles a number of topics has been selected for in-depth study. Computer simulations and vehicle tests are being performed to analyse these problems and to evaluate possible solutions. This paper presents the first results of these activities. An important problem is the occurrence of a state-of-charge difference in the battery of a charge-sustaining hybrid vehicle, when it is driven over a prescribed driving cycle. Results of computer simulations are presented evaluating available methods for detemining the correct fuel consumption of such hybrids. Other problems discussed include dealing with vehicles that are unable to meet the performance requirements of a given cycle, and the effects of driving cycle characteristics on fuel consumption of vehicles with different alternative power trains.
