A high specific power lithium-ion battery has been researched and developed for application to PHEVs. As the first step in this work, a simulation was run to examine the potential for increasing the specific power of the lithium-ion battery. The results of the numerical calculations confirmed the battery's potential for achieving exceptionally high specific power compared with that of conventional batteries. To verify that potential, a prototype of a high specific power lithium-ion cell for PHEV application was fabricated and evaluated. The following results were obtained. (1) The prototype cell discharged specific power of 3,500 W/kg at 0% DOD when fully charged to 4.1 V and approximately 1,500 W/kg at 70% DOD. (2) At 30% DOD, the cell was able to accept approximately 1,000 W/kg of specific recharge power. (3) The cell achieved specific energy of approximately 37 Mh/kg. (4) Because of its low internal resistance, the cell generates little heat and displays excellent heat radiation performance. The results of this study have verified the potential of this lithium-ion battery system for PHEV application to achieve high levels of specific power and specific recharge power that vastly exceed the performance of conventional batteries. In future work, the authors intend to continue to identify issues that must be examined and resolved in order to implement this battery system on production vehicles.
