The purpose of this paper is to describe the present state of knowledge in the galvanising of automobile underbody components, and to discuss the progress of two research programmes initiated by the Galvauto group. These programmes are managed by the International Lead Zinc Research Organisation (ILZRO) and financed by International Zinc Association. Several companies in the general galvanising sector also offered enthusiastic support, both in terms of interest and finance. The Galvauto group is an industrial partnership working towards the development of hot dip galvanising for corrosion protection of automotive underbody components. The actors in the partnership are automotive manufacturers, equipment suppliers or chassis engineering companies, galvanizers who are able to deal with the specific requirements, and the international zinc Industry. The programme reported here was initiated by Union Miniere Zinc during Intergalva 94 in Paris as part of the IZA Market Development programme, initially aimed at the European market. Today, the modern zinc industry does not see itself as a commodity metal producing and trading activity, waiting for orders and hoping for conditions to improve. The industry's marketing people believe that without market development efforts and partnership with current and potential end-user industries and their suppliers, the benefits of our products will take a long time to be discovered.
