Monitoring of railway tracks is a vital task of railway engineers. Important and essential testing parameters of tracks like gage, cross level, twist, alignment and unevenness are to be maintained in suitable tolerances. Care should be taken that above parameters do not exceed the specified tolerances. Indian Railway tracks are monitored using Oscillation Monitoring System (OMS) and Track Recording Car (TRC). OMS measures the vehicle parameters and not the track parameters. TRC is capable of testing all the track parameters but it is highly expensive, microprocessor based and skilled labour is required for its use. Being a complex system, its maintenance is very difficult and availability is rare. Therefore monitoring of some important parameters is done manually. Manual test procedures are tedious and are subjected to human errors. Manual test procedures make use of a 'Gage-cum-level' instrument which measures gage (distance between two rails) and cross level (super-elevation). Cross level is measured at regular intervals of distance along the railway track with the help of a spirit level. This paper discusses the possibility of automation of 'Gage-cum-level' instrument for online railway track monitoring. Proposed track monitoring system would be more accurate, less expensive and would eliminate the need of skilled labour.
