Saft Comp. has developed and is currently producing a 12V/100 Ah Ni-MH module for EV applications. One of the key point for the commercial success of batteries in this application is life duration which is characterized by the ability of the battery to provide its full energy for more than 1000 cycles and by long calendar life. Cycle life can be easy determined by accelerated cycling test, but calendar life cannot be established in a short period of time. In order to predict the battery life as a fünction of the conditions of utilization, the establishment of a mathematical model is necessary. Intensive research and development carried out at Saft since 1992 has resulted in establishing such a model which in turn was one of the factors that enabled Saft to be selected by DaimlerCHRYSLER as Ni-MH battery supplier for its EPIC minivan. This presentation explains how the model was developed and simulations run which show predicted life under various conditions of use. The results of these simulations are that Saft-Ni-MH-batteries exhibit more then sufficient calendar and cycle life to meet the stringent requirements for EV usage as well as other applications.
