A growing U.S. market requirement for heavy-duty liquid petroleum gas (LPG, propane) engines is being driven by urban environmental factors. There is a demand for dedicated LPG powerplants to meet performance, emissions, reliability, and durability characteristics for commercial truck and bus applications. This paper describes the technology and development of the Cummins Engine Co., Inc. (Cummins) 5.9-liter LPG engine (B5.9LPG). This engine utilizes lean combustion, closed-loop air/fuel ratio control, and electronic engine management technologies. Although the engine is similar to the spark-ignition, in-line, six-cylinder natural gas product (B5.9G), the 5.9-liter diesel is the base platform. Extensive engine development was required to accommodate the LPG vehicle fuel (HD-5) requirement. This development activity included fuel handling, combustion, performance, and emissions optimization. The laboratory mechanical durability and customer field validation testing will also be discussed. The B5.9LPG engine is certified to the federal and California low emission standards. The Cummins B5.9LPG engine commenced production in September of 1997.
