To support the progress of ignition systems, a number of contributions have been performed in power semiconductor technologies. Two noticeable progresses in 1990's were ignition IGBTs and smart ignition drivers. IGBTs have provided high-current and high-voltage capabilities in cost-effective manner and smart ignition drivers have reduced the size and the cost of ignition systems with improved reliability. Especially, a single-chip smart IGBT ignition driver proposed in 1998 has provided a size-minimum solution to coil-on-plug ignition systems. It fits in TO-220 package and cost-effectively provides efficient functions required for driving ignition coils of automobiles such as high UIS energy, current limiting operation, and high surge capabilities. Its process, device, and circuit technologies have been presented. To meet a variety of requirements from automotive ignition system designers, more functions and more precise controls should be integrated into single-chip smart IGBTS.
