The refinement of established powertrain technology for cars has reduced air pollution and fuel consumption noticeably during the last decade. New technologies indicate further improvements, especially regarding toxic emissions. However, presently there are no concepts that promise drastic reductions in both areas. The only way to achieve the advancements as needed is to improve the transfer of chemical into mechanical energy and to reduce the energy losses, especially those wasted during braking. The hydrostatic powertrain with energy storage fulfills both requirements. It consists of a very efficient free-piston engine, a hydraulic accumulator to store the energy, and a hydraulic wheelmotor in each wheel, driving the car and recuperating all energy during braking. The paper describes the new powertrain concept, its key components - engine and wheelmotor - and the expected reductions in consumption and emissions, when applied to a car to PNGV specifications. Test results of the hydraulic motor (Proof-of-Concept Model) and the resulting prototype indicate that the predicted advanced technical data have been reached or will likely be reached (efficiency). The new technical solutions illustrated for the free-piston pump-engine indicate that the inherent technical advantages can be realized. The technical risk of both components seems to be manageable. The assumptions for the calculation of fuel consumption are realistic for this stage of the development. The result of the calculation shows that remarkable improvements in consumption and toxic emissions are feasible.
