Conventionally, automobile production operations from development to mass production have been done in a sequential manner. In the production of a new product the process of planning, designing, trial production, and evaluation is repeated on a trial-and-error basis until it is approved. After the approval, installations and adjustments of dies, equipment, and production lines are carried out. With recent demands for global environmental protection and energy conservation and diversifying needs of customers, it is necessary to supply customers promptly with competitive products that meet all these needs. Currently the preparation for production is executed by applying computer-aided simultaneous engineering (CASE) to the development of functional automobile parts, such as engines, transmission and suspensions. The goal is to utilize digital engineering technologies. This paper presents Japanese techniques for applying digital engineering technologies in constructing a low-cost production line for machining work, which enables to bring competitive products in a timely manner on the market. Since in conventional SE production, requirements are suggested only after parts are designed to a certain extent, redesigning of parts is required and lead-time is prolonged. To solve the problem we decided to use a digital mockup tool. This tool enables the virtual assembly of both new and existing parts and check for interference between them as a new product is designed. Application of digital engineering technologies to production preparations has yielded significant results. The time required for evaluating interference between fixture and tool has been reduced significantly, from seven days to one day.
