A program has been initiated in 1989 to develop technology for a Mach 2.4-HSCT (high-speed - mach 2.4 - civil transport). The development of advanced materials for high-speed commercial airplanes involved developing polymeric composites and adhesives. Challenging steps were titanium alloy surface treatments and fuel tank sealants. Thermoplastic polyimides and primarily imide oligomers terminated with various reactive groups were used for developing structural resins. The selected resin PETI-5 exhibited the best overall combination of specific desirable properties. In the next step following the difficult and expensive development work, the new resin had to be converted into acceptable product forms. Prepreg and adhesive material forms based on PETI-5 provided large, high-quality composite and sandwich panels and showed significant promise for successful fabrication of large components. Although much progress was made in developing an environmentally safe 177 deg C-durable surface treatment for titanium alloys, the best surface treatment, a sol-gel system, still lacked the durability to meet Mach 2.4 HSCT requirements. The most difficult area of material technology involved fuel tank sealants. No sealant have been developed that provided the combination of properties to meet the desired requirements.
