The application of the Kalman filtering conept to audio perception enhancement in noisy time varying environments has been investigated. As an example, the problem of noise controlled audio enhancement inside cars is considered. In this application, a source signal is amplified under the control of a sound processing unit. The controlling parameters of the unit are adapted to the frequency response and the spectrum of the noise measured at the listening position. Since the automotive audio environment is non-stationary, these quantitites must be determined dynamically. Being sample adaptive and recursive, the Kalman filtering algorithm is highly appropriate for handling this and similar problems. Both tasks of dynamic frequency response identification and noise characteristics estimation were formulated by means of a single measuring and processing arrangement, and satisfactorily accomplished by applying the Kalman filtering concept. Simulation results prove the effectiveness of this approach for the application mentioned.
