For the given drivetrain concept of the Hybrid III an optimised power electronic and control unit had to be developed. The choice of the different power electronic components is predetermined by the operating points of the system and their influence on the overall losses. The power electronic unit includes also an advanced brake resistor concept as well as a battery management. Optimisation of the hardware is assisted by optimisation strategies on the control level. Different control strategies were evaluated with regard to the electrical machine in the Hybrid III. Best results were obtained by adapting the magnetic flux in the machine to the load level so that the sum of the electrical and magnetic losses become minimal. An overview of the possible modulation methods is presented to allow further reductions of the losses in the machine and the inverter. The realised prototypes are presented.
