At the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich a parallel hybrid powertrain (Hybrid III) including a heavy flywheel and a continuously variable transmission (CVT) in a i(2)-arrangement has been designed and is operated on a dynamic test bench. A predicted increased fuel efficiency better than 40 % in the ECE R15/04 cycle could be confirmed on the test rig. The duty-cycle-mode of the spark ignited engine together with the flywheel is running very well and with excellent fuel economy at part load. The operation of the i(2)-CVT is satisfying and guarantees a convenient recuperation of braking energy into the flywheel with an efficiency of up to 51 %
