Sedco Express is the first of a new fleet of DPS3 semi-submersible oil and gas drilling exploration rigs for operation in water depths to 2590 m. The vessel features the first use of Mermaid podded thruster drives in an offshore application as well as using the clean deck design, whereby all machinery is located in the pontoon. The Mermaid is a product developed by Kamewa in cooperation with Alstom Drives and Controls. Rugby-based Alstom Projects was chosen to provide the power, propulsion and control systems for this revolutionary new vessel by Sedco Forex.
