Aircraft noise from small aircraft, operating from small airfields, can be annoying to people living nearby. The benefits of maintaining, and even increasing, involvement in flying small aircraft are significant and outweigh the objections to this type of aviation. In order to decrease the annoyance associated with noise from small aircraft, a simple method for characterizing and regulating the noise environment in the vicinity of small airfields is described and proposed. An important feature of the proposed method is the motivation it provides to manufacturers and operators to develop quieter aircraft.
