A method combing a genetic algorithm with a Rankine panel method to optimize the hull with respect to wave resistance is based on a perturbation approach around a base hull. Improvements of the forebody reduce the wave resistance by 25 % for a Series 60 (CB = 0.6) at Fn = 0.3 by modifying the original form to bulb-like bow shape. U-type frame lines reduce about 10 % wave resistance at Fn = 0.3 for the SR138 container ship. The genetic algorithm is more successful in finding a global optimum than a Hooke-Jeeves direct method which finds the nearest local optimum.
