The current strategy adopted by the Royal Navy of calendar based, intrusive preventative maintenance is under review, with the emphasis being placed on a Reliability Centred Maintenance (RCM) methodology as a replacement. Condition monitoring is firmly embodied within RCM as a preventative maintenance task, offering benefits in increased equipment availability and lower maintenance costs. In pursuit of these benefits, an integrated condition monitoring philosophy has been adopted, taking a systems approach to gearing, with reference made to internals, lubricant and atmosphere. This paer describes the investigative work undertaken to date in support of this philosophy, to determine the applicability of condition monitoring techniques available. Potential failure modes are considered and a detailed presentation given of both laboratory and field experience of condition monitoring techniques, drawing predominantly on vibration analysis, with brief discussion given on atmospheric and lubricant applications. In light of this experience, areas for future development are proposed.
