The topic of helicopter Health and Usage Monitoring (HUM) has been the focus of rapidly expanding interest and activity over the last few years. The most significant advance in helicopter health monitoring associated with the advent of HUM / systems is the implementation of a comprehensive drive train vibration diagnostic function. The paper presents an analysis of the capabilities of this function based on a review of Stewart Hughes Limited's HUMS in-service experience. The analysis shows that, through its ability to detect a wide range of drive train faults, the HUMS vibration diagnostic function is providing real airworthiness and maintenance benefits. By building on the experience to date, it will be possible to continue to develop and enhance the capabilities of this important function.
