Maximizing paint adhesion to the substrate, the plastic material should exhibit good wettability, where the surface energy of the paint is less than or equal to that of the substrate. Physical and chemical forces should be kept to a minimum. This article discusses the problems with the selection of plastic materials that governed by four criteria (good surface finish, paint and oven compatibility, chemical and impact resistance): maximizing paint adhesion to the substrate; affecting adhesion by variations at the surface of the molded parts; preventing adhesion by the presence of mold release agents; migration of low-molecular-weight additives; pretreatment of plastic parts prior to painting; cleaning of plastic surfaces by alcohols, glycol ethers and aliphatics; flame-treatment processes with plastic parts; application of chlorinated polyolefins; curing of the plastic parts; determining the pereformance of the chlorinated polyolefins; structural shrinkage of plastic parts by heat used for dryoff. The performance of the coating system can be affected by the selection of the plastic substrate.
