Laboratory corrosion testing of automotive products has greatly changed over the years. In the beginning, samples were placed in a cabinet that had a single environment, with little or no concern for correlation to outdoor exposures. Recent advantages in the automotive and steel industry have elevated laboratory corrosion testing from art to science, as cooperative effort continue to develop complex cyclic methods that replicate end-use conditions and enable prediction of service life. The salt fog test is carried out according to ASTM B117 by means of the Atlas Salt Fog Tower or the Atlas CCX Cyclic Corrosion Chamber. Atlas corrosion cabinets have been designed to double baffle the fog - the first baffle is the vertically mounted tube of the Omni-Fog Dispersion tower, the second baffle is the inverted cone at the top of the tower. Traditional corrosion tests first posed major problems for auto manufacturers who were steadily increasing their demands for service life information. A more realistic test was needed. Labs began exposing samples to various environmental stresses that promoted corrosion, subjecting them to on condition after another. This process was called cyclic corrosion testing. The different cycles such as salt or chemical fog cycle, high humidity cycle, dry-off cycle, dwell cycle, variable humidity cycle, direct spray cycle, immersion cycle and gas injection cycle are discussed. There are several features specific to cyclic corrosion cabinets such as exposure zone volume, sample capacity, floor space requirement, temperature range, venting of exhaust, power consumption etc., that should be reviewed. The CCX is adaptable for meeting future testing requirements. The CCX is capable of performing far more tests than basic wet/dry cycles. The future promises a variety of new cycles and test conditions.
