Over the last years GNS (van der Giessen-de Noord's Shipbuilding Division, Krimpen aan den Ijssel, Holland) developed their own standardised inhouse design of so-called handy-size 'RoPax-ferries', which are perfectly suited for the transport of large numbers of trucks, cars, coaches and passengers. GNS delivered their yard number 975, the roll-on/roll-off car-/passenger ferry 'Commodore Clipper' to her owners recently. The newbuilding is a further development of an extremely successful vessel type of which a number have already been built by GNS for clients in Italy, Ireland, UK, Sweden, Germany and China. GNS has once again proven its ability to build a very complex vessel on schedule, in only 14 months. The dimensions of the vessel can be seen from a table. Within these relatively compact dimensions, 92 truck-trailer combinations and 279 cars can be transported. 'Commodore Clipper' also offers modern accommodation for 500 passengers, including a self-service restaurant, lounge, panoramic bar, VIP lounge and duty-free shop. Sleeping accommodation is also provided for 160 passengers. Some examples of the main dimensions from the table are given as follows: Length over all = 129.14 m; Breadth mld. = 23.40 m; Deadweight = 3800 t; Tonnage about 13460 GT; Main Propulsion: 2 x 4320 kW at 600 rpm; PTO: 2 x 1700 kW at 1500 rpm.; Speed = 19.0 kn; Rudders: 2 x Becker active flap rudders.
