The combination of a fuel cell generator with a battery is an interesting concept for powering small electric boats. The motors of leisure boats are usually are used only during very limited periods of time, most of the time the boats are mooring. With a battery as a buffer storage, a boat can be powered by a relatively small, even portable fuel cell generator. When designing such a hybrid system, the particular characteristics of boat drives have to be considered. Usually electric leisure boates are operating in the displacement mode. This means that the power required to propel the boat is increasing with approx. the 3rd power of boat speed. In case of an empty battery it is therefore possible to drive the boat at a reasonable speed with the fuel cell alone even if the power output of the fuel cell is a small fraction of rated motor power.
