The author discusses the use (active or potential) of composites in various aspects of transportation with particular emphasis on structural applications. Based on these end uses and their specific needs, the role of nonwovens is indicated. Structural composites have demonstrated and exhibit the greatest potential in the commercial (and possibly general) aviation markets. To a large extent, the performance demand rule out the use of nonwoven reinforced systems. There is potential for them in secondary structures, particularly in passenger compartments. The railroad rolling stock area is uncertain, at best, as much for its highly conservative and fragmented approach to new materials in new equipment as any other consideration. In freight cars, there is a distinct possibility because of these gains in lowered costs to the shipper of cargo. The truck and off road vehicle market has some potential particularly in the former area because of the over the road total weight constraint. The automotive market is very limited by uncertainty in regard to the cost affectivity of these new materials. The Partnership for a New Generation of Vehicles (PNGV) program and alternate fuel vehicles represent a potential but they are, at least, as much as a decade away from reality.
