The electromagnetic valve actuation is a very promising technique for the new engine generation in order to minimize fuel consumption and maximize engine torque. Nevertheless, customer acceptance is leaded by minimization of the noise of the valve impact and reduction of the power consumption of the actuators is the key element on a yield point of view. This paper describes the ways SAGEM S.A. is working on these points. The authors explain how, with a specific design, they significantly reduce the passive noise generated by the actuator and how with a closed loop control of the impact speed the authors reach the speed landing target with robustness, so as to have a silent, safe and easily calibrated actuator. The authors explain too how they significantly reduce the power consumption of the actuator modifying its design, choosing the good materials so as to increase its magnetic characteristics, and drawing benefit of the adequate closed loop control.
