Variable Valve Actuating (VVA) Systems have considered by engine designers for several decades, and occasionally have been introduced in production engines. Many OEM companies are now seriously considering large-scale application of these mechanisms in their next generation vehicles because of today's drivers' expectations for performance and government legislators requirements of increased fuel economy. This paper presents the continuing developments of the Delphi mechanical VVA system that was presented at the 1998 Aachen Colloqium. Data derived from a motored cylinder head test fixture and from a running dynamometer engine is now available and is presented herein. The motored head test data focuses on VVA system friction, and actuator and control system performance. Fuel economy, emissions, torque and idle stability characteristics are presented in the dynamometer test section.
