A review of automotive wastes is presented covering solid wastes, liquid wastes, gaseous emissions, toxicology studies and waste management. Wastes considered include automotive bodies, oil filters, waste tires and lead-acid batteries. The recycling challenges for the automotive industry are discussed for steel, aluminium, magnesium and plastics. The key to effective recycling involves the reduction in the number of different materials used in the cars. New recycling technologies are discussed for separation or compatibilization of mixed or contaminated plastic wastes. These technologies include delamination of hard-to separate composite or multi-component materials without using heat or volatile solvents, and separation of commingled plastics without impairing their mechanical properties.
