The paper illustrates details of the excellent worldwide results with the replacement of tar impregnated high alumina refractories by the latest generation of Al2O3-C-SiC. These good results were obtained in ladles under aggressive desulphurization where the torpedo ladles is used only as a transportation vessel. The development of the product, conception of the lining projects and operational results will be shown with emphasis on the reduction of the specific consumption and the increase of availability in an environment of higher chemical and mechanical attack. As presented on Steel Mill A and B practical results, with this new refractories concepts it is possible to reduce greatly the maintenance repairs from 3 to 1, allowing lower costs, reducing more than 30% of the men/power need, saving energy and refractory material, improving the torpedo car availability and the safety for the operation.
