Magnesium alloys in form of die-castings and extrusions offer a high potential for modular light-weight structures. To fulfil the industrial order spectrum, there is a need for reliable joining techniques using fusion welding for the construction material magnesium. Laser beam welding shows a high potential because of it's low heat input, small heat affected zones and high rate of solidification. In the paper, a summary of research results of investigation concerning the welding behaviour is shown. The research work contains investigations on joints of die-castings such as AZ91D and AM50A, extrusions such as AZ31B and AZ61A and joints of different alloys. In addition to that, the influence of speed of solidification on the hardness in the weld is shown.
