The environmental focus of automotive products and their product system in Europe, has been reflected in the new legislation governing the recyclability of vehicles. The paper presents a business model approach within a whole life cost methodology, which emphasises design for recyclability of automotive vehicles. The business model approach reviewed industrial practices and adapted life cycle analysis techniques to give special consideration to recyclability and costing of alternative design strategies. Engineering designers can use the business model approach to manufacture a more recyclable vehicle, which presents the economic viability of a product or component once it has been recycled. This paper presents a product where the increasing complexity of product design, produces economic justifications for design for recycling.
