Two basic process steps lead to aluminium foam products: aluminium or aluminium alloy powder is mixed with a foaming agent powder and compacted to precursor material, which is placed into moulds and heated to the melting temperature of aluminium. The shape of the mould cavity defines the geometry of the aluminium foam product similar to casting. A manufacturing route for series production is introduced. A specially designed foaming furnace with a volume of 2.000 x 1.000 x 500 mm3 is explained in detail. Typical applications of aluminium foam products can be energy absorption parts for passenger cars, trucks and railway vehicles as well as structural parts in vehicles or construction panels.
