A gear control system has been newly developed for a belt-drive continuously variable transmission (CVT). This system consists of a generator that produces the target gear ratio waveform and a gear ratio servo system. The gear ratio waveform generator determines the target gear ratio according to the driving conditions so as to achieve the desired fuel economy and other performance parameters. The gear ratio servo system controls the gear ratio response to the specified value so as to make the actual gear ratio coincide with the target gear ratio. Robust model-matching has been incorporated in the gear ratio system to deal with the expected effects of various disturbances, such as variation in hydraulic characteristics or changes in control system characteristics with use. As a result this control system meets the performance targets exspected of a production vehicle transmission.
