This paper describes the functions and the advantages of a remote firing bus. The remote firing bus responds to an increasing number of airbags in modern cars. At the same time the airbag control unit's connector size and the wiring harness efforts can be reduced. Disadvantages like unwanted deployments by misuse, ESD or electrical overstress can be solved by introducing a remote firing bus. Different delivery options of a platform can be handled most efficient, without adding costs to the low-end to support the high-end options. The remote firing bus is a single master bus. The master drives a tow wire physical layer for communication and power supply of the slaves. Read and write frames are used for bidirectional communication with single slaves for example for diagnostics. Broadcasr frames are used to send commands to a single or several slaves at the same time. The remote firing bus can also be used as a sensor bus. Future airbag control units will be use the same bus system to communicate with smart squibs and sensors.
