Fujitsu Ten has developed a compact 76 GHz millimeter-wave automotive radar with a scanning function. Radar type is a FMCW (Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave). In order to attain high performance, compactness and light weight, the authors integrated transmitting and receiving antenna into single antenna. To achive a wider angle coverage, the authors have incorporated a high-speed scanning actuator. Another goal was to minimize the number of parts by means of MMICs (Monolithic Microwave Integrated Circuits) and analog IC technology. They use a DSP (Digital Signal Processor) and software that can correctly recognize multiple targets. They have successfully evaluated the radar's suitability for ACC (Adaptive Cruise Control) by installing it in a test car. This paper describes the technology used and the results of the evaluation.
