Speech synthesis in cars will be necessary for comfortable user assistance, traffic information systems, telephone applications, etc. The paper discusses the typical requirements in this application area. The Dresden University of Technology has developed a synthesis system, DreSS, which is well suited for car applications. Languages which are supported include now German, English, Russian, Czech, Italian, and Chinese. In general, speech synthesis of this complexity needs a PC which is regularly not available in automotive environment. That's why, Fraunhofer Institute IMS Dresden developed a special processor to run the speech synthesizer autonomously. This processor is described, and an application example is discussed briefly.
