Based on studies conducted at a steel plant, the phenol content of coke plant waste water can be reduced to less than one tenth pqm at a cost as low as 8c per lb of phenol removed. Additionally, the process can handle toxic materials ( such as phenol and cyanide), is not affected by fluctations in concentrated dissolved organics and will produce an effluent of higher quality than conventional biological treatment.
