Rubber pads with grooved surfaces are often used to isolate vibration while supporting a compressive load. Study was made of the relationship between the compression characteristics and the cross-sectional areas of grooves of rubber pads for use in rails for antivibration mount. Tests demonstrated quantitatively that when the cross-sectional area of grooves is small, the rise in the compressive deformation curve is small and that the curve gradient increases in the high load range. Thus, an effective index was gained which helps elucidate the characteristics of rubber pads, which work has conventionally depended on empirical methods.
