A hydrogen flame ionization detector (Hyfid) has been developed for conducting martian and lunar experiments to detect life-derived organic matter in the soil. the detector is integrated with a soil pyrolyzer system of 25-mg soil capacity from which pyrolysis products are pneumatically transported to the detector for analysis. the hyfid utilizes hydrogen with a helium diluent and pure oxygen to yield a sensitivity greater than 0.25 coulomb/gram-atom carbon: Organic matter can be detected to 0.1 ppm. A programmer automates every task of the analysis cycle. In addition, a detector signal current electrometer with a seven-decade range without range switching has been developed.
