Good quality illumination reduces the number and severity of night accidents; however, the daytime rate is often increased due to placement of numerous stationary objects near the driving lanes. the purpose of this paper is to analyze lighting system design, with special emphasis on its geometric features with the aim of reducing driving hazards. In looking for effective solutions to this problem some modifications in design practice will be reviewed, including the description of a test installation carried out by the department of highways, ontario.
