Three s-band space twt's are described which appreciably advance the state-ofthe-art. A 100-watt tube and a 50-watt tube operate respectively at 49.0 and 43.5 percent overall efficiency at 2.3 ghz in encapsulated and deliverable form. These tubes alo exhibit an interesting property called variable-power high-efficiency operation where the power output can be varied over an 8 to 9 db range at fixed drive by varying only dc voltages. Efficiency remains high at all output levels.
