In space-to-earth links, where information in the form of voice channels or bits per second are being transmitted by analog or digital techniques, component sensitivity concepts must be replaced by system sensitivity concepts. the ultimate criteria of system sensitivity is the number of voice channels or the bit error rate recoverable from information transmitted from a spacecraft over great distances and received and processed by an earth terminal. This paper introduces basic concepts of signal-to-noise ratio in the overall transmission path.
