Three instruments to measure the ablation of charring heat shield materials during entry are discussed. the design of each device is described and the results of an extensive program of arc-jet and rocket-exhaust tests are presented. the sensors have successfully measured the in-flight ablation of various heat shield materials in several nasa entry tests. Two new sensing techniques now being investigated at langley have the potential of making a dual measurement of two ablation parameters at a single heat shield location.
