A discussion is presented of the potential market for vertical takeoff and landing (Vtol) aircraft and the factors which cause this market to exist. An evaluation is given of the ability of the vtol aircraft to compete with other means of transportation, along with a determination of the design criteria that the aircraft will be required to meet to be competitive. the technical implications and requirements of a vtol transportation system are discussed.
