The leakage of oil and gas from a pipeline causes a hazardous environmental problem. In order to prevent such accidents, pipeline survey work using inspection pig techniques has been utilized to detect pitting corrosion on pipe walls. Information to promote the maintenance and repair program of a pipeline is provided by analyzing the inspection pig data. The inspection pig technique using the ultrasonic method has been developed and a prototype inspection pig was constructed. The formation of the prototype pig and the main performance results of the prototype pig obtained through a test loop and an actual pipeline are described. The results indicated that the prototype pig could detect corrosion and assess pit depth on the normal pipe wall as well as on and/or near the welds.
