A special oil was formulated for factory-built methanol-fueled vehicles in 1983 to alleviate ring and bore wear problems in the methanol-fueled engines, especially during low temperature operation. This oil passed modified methanol-fueled Sequence IID, IIID and V-D tests, however, extended high speed/high load severe vehicle tests indicated there was a buildup of combustion chamber deposits which led to damage of exhaust valve seats after 45000 miles. A second generation oil for methanol-fueled engines has been developed. It is designed to improve the high speed/high load applications while maintaining wear protection capability at low temperature. Limited engine and vehicle tests to date indicate the success of this new oil. This paper discusses laboratory formulation development as well as engine and vehicle test experience.
