Hydrated alcohol as it is presently supplied for automotive fuel consumption displays a high level of corrosion. This corrosion can be attributed to significant amounts of acetic acid and other ions present in today's alcohol, justifying therefore the need for treated metal surfaces and components employed in the alcohol engine. Available preliminary data obtained after treatment with the ion exchange process evidenciates a reduction in the agressivity of the hydrated alcohol fuel while maintaining adequate physico-chemical properties, as well as the ability to standardize alcohol production supplied from different locations throughout the country. The ion exchange process when compared to other available processes, demonstrates better results in terms of the treated alcohol's overall properties at a relatively low costs.
