Ethanol is being used for three different applications in Brazil at present time: pure ethanol as fuel in otto cycle engines, mainly for cars and light trucks; ethanol-gasoline blends, in substitution of lead; and, to a minor extent, as fuel for otto or diesel cycle engines of trucks and tractors at the sugar can industry. The use of ethanol in straight ethanol automobiles has developed to the extent of representing over 95 % of all cars produced at the moment. The main technological changes introduced by the manufacturers are presented together with fuel consumption data obtained under comparative conditions for several vehicles. The use of ethanol in gasoline blends is presented from two points of view; first, as a fuel, by its heat value, with price determined by the price of gasoline; secondly, as an anti-knock component for substitution of lead. In Brazil, ethanol is technically and economically feasible in gasoline blends with 22 % alcohol, used nationwide. For the lead reduction programs established in the USA and Europe, ethanol represents a feasible anti-knock alternative, as compared to methanol, toluene or oil cracking.
