As a preparatory step prior to introducing gasolines containing oxygenates (methanol and TBA) extensive distribution trials have been conducted by BP to assess whether water contamination particularly during long sea/barge journeys, was likely to pose a major operating problem. Full scale distribution trials involving movement of product from the blending point to the customer have been undertaken in Sweden, Norway, Netherlands and Switzerland over the last four years. This work clearly demonstrated the weak points in the storage and handling system in terms of water contamination and in two of the trials conducted this was severe enough to cause phase separation of the alcohol from the base fuel at the reception point. Techniques had to be developed to remove and dispose of the separated layer and to correct the remaining product to ensure it was of acceptable quality for subsequent sale in the market.
